Male Breast Reduction

What is Male Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is not just for female patients anymore. Many men deal with the often embarrassing issue of increased breast tissue and think they are alone in their issues with self-esteem and lack of self-confidence. Rest assured, gynecomastia is relatively common, and men considering surgery to correct the abnormally excessive breast tissue should not feel ashamed or embarrassed. Gynecomastia is a term that refers to the development of more than normal amounts of breast tissue in men. There may be a variety of causes and the fatty breast tissue may be resistant to other weight loss efforts. This type of abnormal breast development can affect males of any age. Two of the most common causes are estrogen-testosterone hormonal imbalance and medication.

Male Breast ReductionMen that struggle with gynecomastia will be relieved to learn there is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure that can help restore their physical image and self-confidence. It is important to give your surgeon a full and complete medical history as well as a list of any medications that you are taking so they can narrow down a possible external cause for the excess breast tissue. If a medication can be eliminated or a hormonal balance restored, you may be able to achieve longer lasting effects without surgery.

Male Breast ReductionSurgical breast reduction for gynecomastia is similar to breast reduction in women or liposuction on other areas of the body. Your doctor will put you to sleep with general anesthesia, make a series of incisions, and remove excess fatty tissue. Sutures or surgical tape will be used to close the incisions, and recovery will occur over the next few weeks. Side effects that commonly occur during recovery include pain, swelling, bruising, and hematoma or seroma formation. Complications that should be immediately reported to your physician include increased pain, swelling, redness, inflammation, or delayed wound healing with separation of the incision edges. All of these need to be treated quickly in order to prevent long-term problems or infection.

Male Breast ReductionThe best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men with realistic body images and a mild to moderate amount of excess breast tissue that has been resistant to other forms of treatment. Patients should be in general good health without complicating diseases such as clotting or bleeding disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of negative reaction to anesthetic.
