What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and shape of large breasts. Breast enlargement (or hypertrophy) usually starts soon after puberty, but may be triggered by pregnancy or a large amount of weight gain. While the cause of uncomfortably large breasts is unknown, surgeons can help make their patients more physically and emotionally comfortable.

What is involved in breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction is done under general anesthesia. Pre-operatively, your surgeon will indicate with a marker the incisions he or she will make around your breasts. This is usually done in a sitting-up position to ensure the final shape and size is correct.

During the operation, the surgeon makes incisions along the marker lines to create flaps on both sides of the breast. Excess skin, fat, and glandular tissues are removed. Very often, the nipples will naturally be moved to a higher position on the breast, but remain attached to nerves and blood vessels. Rarely, the nipple must be removed from extremely large breasts and grafted to a new location. This will, unfortunately, cause loss of sensation in the nipple and areola.

As an alternative totraditional breast reduction in Syracuse NY, liposuction may be an option for women when only fat needs to be removed. This type of surgery often has fewer complications and unsightly scarring, but requires highly elastic skin to achieve the desired results.

How do you find a surgeon?

Ensure the surgeon you talk to in your area is open to your questions, concerns and expectations. He or she should be certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have at least 5 years of experience in this field.
