Labiaplasty

labiaplasty thumbnail syracuse plastic surgeryMany women are bothered by the appearance of enlarged labia minora, the clinical term for the inner genital lips. They may appear to be uneven, large, thick, and can extend beyond the labia majora, the outer genital lips. This can make a woman feel self-conscious about her body, and at times the labia can interfere with certain activities such as cycling or can create pain during sex.

Labiaplasty with Dr. DeRoberts and Dr. Armenta reduces and shapes a woman’s labia minora and majora.

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to change the appearance of the external genitalia of a woman. More common is surgery to reduce the labia minora, which can overhand the outer lips. This can create rubbing or appear bulky when a woman is wearing revealing clothing or performing certain sports..

Labiaplasty Procedure

Dr. DeRoberts and Dr. Armenta performs labiaplasty using the latest techniques and methods. The general goal of the labiaplasty procedure is to reduce the size of the labia minor. The most common method Dr. DeRoberts and Dr. Armenta use is a wedge labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction. Since the removal of the labia tissue is in a wedge fashion there is significantly reduced scarring and clitoral sensation is preserved. And by reducing clitoral hood tissue, the clitoral sensation can be significantly enhanced.

In some cases, the other lips, the labia majora, may be larger than is comfortable. This can be physically or emotionally uncomfortable for a woman. Dr. DeRoberts and Dr. Armenta removes an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.

Risks Associated with Labiaplasty

Risks are low with labiaplasty thanks to the highly vascular nature of this area of the body. The risks specific to labiaplasty are potential chronic dryness, loss of sensation, and possible pain during intercourse. These are very rare.

Labiaplasty Recovery

Patients need to restrict their activity to low-key choices for the first two to five days. There will be some swelling and pain that can be lessened with icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 off. Exercise will generally have to wait for two to three weeks. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks after your surgery. Engaging in sex too soon presents a risk of tearing the incisions. Tampons need to be avoided for six weeks, as well.

Does labiaplasty reduce sensation?

This is a risk with labiaplasty, although a relatively small one. Most women report less chafing and physical discomfort, improved sex life, and an overall boost in confidence after labiaplasty.

Can I have labiaplasty if i still want children?

This procedure is mostly cosmetic, addressing only the outer genitalia. It won’t impact pregnancy or childbirth at all.
